  • nome e cognome;
  • classe di appartenenza;
  • fermata di salita durante il percorso di andata;
  • fermata di discesa durante il ritorno;
  • contatti dei genitori;
  • tipologia di viaggio prevista;

  • classe di appartenenza;
  • fermata prevista per il percorso di andata;
  • fermata prevista per il percorso di ritorno;
  • contatto rapido del genitore;
  • modalità di viaggio del partecipante;
  • punto e momento di salita;

  1. A ogni partecipante viene associato un profilo all’interno dell’applicazione del Comitato.

  • precisione nell’identificazione di ogni bambino;
  • rapidità nella lettura del tag;
  • maggiore comodità per volontari e accompagnatori;
  • possibilità di controllare la presenza durante tutto il percorso;
  • accesso immediato alle informazioni associate al partecipante;
  • riduzione del rischio di errori nell’identificazione;

Every morning, while hundreds of families drive their children to school, in Noceto there has been a different way of travelling from home to school for more than fifteen years.

It is the Comitato Piedibus Noceto, a volunteer group founded in 2010 with the aim of accompanying primary school children to and from school on foot along organised and supervised routes.

Today, the service involves more than 240 children and over 70 volunteers, organised across three routes – Blue, Yellow and Green – with three daily services: the morning journey at 8:00 AM and the return journeys at 12:30 PM and 4:00 PM.

Managing these numbers also means needing to know, at any given time, which children are taking part in a specific journey and at which stop they are expected to get on or off.

To make this process simpler, faster and safer, since 2015 the Committee has been using NFC technology, assigning each participant a personal tag linked to their digital profile.

In brief: the NFC system enables volunteers to quickly identify each child using the tag attached to their backpack and check the information associated with their journey.

The challenge: accurately identifying every participant

A Piedibus works in a similar way to a public transport route, with predefined routes, stops and schedules. The difference is that the passengers are children who walk to and from school accompanied by volunteers.

With more than 240 registered children and several daily services, the Comitato Piedibus Noceto needed a system that could identify each participant in a unique, fast and reliable way.

For each participant, volunteers may need to check information such as:

  • first and last name;
  • school class;
  • boarding stop for the morning journey;
  • drop-off stop for the return journey;
  • parents’ contact information;
  • type of journey required;
  • days of the week and stops associated with the service.

The requirement was therefore not simply to record attendance, but to identify each child with certainty and quickly access the information associated with them during the journey.

The solution: an NFC Tag on every child’s backpack

To digitalise the process, the Comitato Piedibus Noceto implemented a solution combining a dedicated participant management application with personal NFC Tags.

Each child receives an NFC Key Fob with NXP NTAG213 chip , attached to a strap and carabiner and secured directly to the child’s backpack.

The tag provides a unique identifier that allows the application to recognise the participant and retrieve the information associated with their profile.

A dedicated app developed with ENGIM srl

Since 2015, ENGIM srl, based in Modena, has provided Piedibus Noceto free of charge with an application specifically designed to digitally register attendance for every Piedibus journey.

The first version of the app enabled the Committee to register and monitor the attendance of more than 140 participants.

In 2021, a new version of the application was introduced to support the increasingly complex management of the service, which now involves around 220–240 registered children.

For each child, the system now provides quick access to information including:

  • school class;
  • the scheduled stop for the morning journey;
  • the scheduled stop for the return journey;
  • quick access to a parent’s contact details;
  • the participant’s travel arrangements;
  • where and when the child is expected to join the route;
  • where and when the child is expected to leave the route.

The system can also manage up to five different stops for the morning journey and five different stops for the return journey, one for each day of the school week. This allows the service to adapt to the different organisational needs of individual families.

All of this is made possible by the integration between the application and the NFC Tags, which accurately connect each registered participant with their corresponding digital information.

How the Piedibus NFC system works

  1. Each participant is assigned a profile within the Committee’s application.
  2. A unique NFC Tag is linked to the profile.
  3. The tag is secured to the child’s backpack using a strap and carabiner.
  4. During the service, a volunteer brings the NFC-enabled smartphone close to the tag.
  5. The application identifies the child and allows the volunteer to check the information related to their journey.

Checks can be carried out not only at the beginning of the journey but at any point along the route, enabling volunteers to quickly verify who is present and access the information associated with each participant.

Faster identification and greater control during each journey

Introducing NFC technology has made the day-to-day management of participants much easier.

The main benefits highlighted by the Committee include:

  • accurate identification of each child;
  • fast tag reading;
  • greater convenience for volunteers and supervisors;
  • the ability to check attendance throughout the journey;
  • immediate access to information associated with each participant;
  • reduced risk of identification errors;
  • easy operation even with a large number of participants and several daily journeys.

The result: volunteers can accurately know who is present, which route they are on and what type of journey they are taking, using a simple NFC read.

Simple technology integrated into everyday activities

One of the strengths of the project is the simplicity with which the technology has been integrated into the service.

No complex infrastructure is required: the NFC Tag is simply attached to the backpack and stays with the child throughout the Piedibus service.

According to the Committee, the tags have proven to be reliable, durable and accurate, even considering their everyday use by children.

More than twice as many participants since 2015

The Comitato Piedibus Noceto began operating in October 2010 and reached its 16th year of activity in 2026.

NFC technology was introduced into the project in 2015. Since then, participation has steadily increased, from approximately 100 children to more than 240 participants in recent years.

According to the Committee, the reliability of the NFC-based identification system has contributed to its ability to manage an increasingly large service while keeping participant checks simple and efficient.

“Use them because they are absolutely reliable and safe.”

NFC and sustainable mobility: technology serving the community

The project is not only an interesting example of NFC technology in action, but also an important sustainable school mobility initiative.

According to data collected by the Committee, Piedibus has helped remove more than 200 vehicles from local traffic.

In recent years, the service has also reached an average of approximately 43,000 kilometres walked every year, with an estimated reduction of around 6,000 kg of CO₂ per school year.

The Committee compares this result to the annual environmental impact of approximately 120–130 trees.

When NFC simplifies identification

The Comitato Piedibus Noceto case demonstrates how NFC technology can also be used outside traditional industrial, retail or logistics applications.

Whenever a unique identifier needs to be associated with a person, object or activity, an NFC Tag can provide a simple way to connect the physical world with a digital system.

One of the key advantages of NFC is the simplicity of the interaction: bringing a compatible device close to the tag is enough to identify the associated item and access the required information.

The NFC Tag used in the project

To identify participants, the Comitato Piedibus Noceto uses a printable NFC Key Fob, attached to each child’s backpack using a strap and carabiner.

The model used in the project is available with an NXP NTAG213 chip and makes it possible to associate each participant with a unique NFC identifier that can be quickly read using compatible smartphones.
